The seasoned chefs don’t need them, but if you’re a novice who is welcoming Bappa home this year, you’ve come to the correct place.
Modak making is an art that very few master. For those who need a quick turnaround and consistently well-shaped modaks, a modak mould is a necessity.
At Mishry, we tested six different types and shapes of moulds. While some performed exceptionally, some were not designed well and had low usability.

Modak Maker Machine – Quick Glance
Quick glance at the type of moulds we tested and the rating awarded to them.
Our Review Process + Factors
Our factors include design, usability, and convenience. Their subcategories are as follows:
1. Design
Design, broadly speaking, is what the brand offers in terms of the –
- Material of the modak mould
- Shape of the mould
- Size of the cavity and mould
- Sturdiness
- Number of petals/serrations
2. Usability
No one makes 2-3 modaks and sets the mould aside for the day. Usually, it’s a fairly large amount that can be tiring to make one after the other. Under this parameter, we were looking at how easy the contraption is to use for a prolonged period. How does the design of the mould contribute to enhancing its overall usability?
3. Convenience
Ease of use, cleaning, storage space required and the time and effort required to use these moulds.
How Did We Test These?
Our aim was not to test the recipe, but to test the moulds for their design, convenience, and the usability they offer. This is why the recipe we used to test the moulds was not important. A simple suji hawla was made and all the moulds were checked for the above mentioned parameters.

List of Best Modak Maker Moulds
Which is the ideal modak maker mould for which purpose? Let’s dig into the details.
1. C&G INDIA Plastic Modak Mould – Best For Traditional Modaks
How does it work? Size wise (cavity and opening) this is perfect for making traditional steamed modaks. As the cavity size is large, the fingers can go in to properly spread the covering leaving enough space for a sufficient amount of coconut-jaggery filling. Our modaks were large, long and thick.
We found using and cleaning this very easy.
Product design – This is a big-sized, sturdy plastic mould. Has a 5.5 cm length.
- Sturdy plastic mould.
- Large, well-shaped thick modaks
- Big size ideal for steamed modaks.
- Easy to clean and use.
Best choice if you’re planning on making traditional steamed modak.
2. Devchhaya Enterprise Aluminium Modak Moulds – Triple Sided Contraption
How does it work? This is a triple sided contraption where you need to close the mould and stuff the filling from the cavity below. Because it can be opened completely, demolding the modak isn’t tough. It is easy to use, and easy to clean. We liked how a tiny, well-shaped modak emerged once we opened the mould. (See picture for results)
Product design
This is a small-sized aluminum mould with a height of approximately 2 cm. The cavity volume is 2.5 cm x 2 cm. It doesn’t require a large storage space and can be kept in your cutlery drawer.
- Sturdy. No loose nuts, screws and flimsy material.
- Needs very little storage space.
- Easy to use and clean.
- Modaks demolded with ease.
- The shape of the modak is beautiful.
- Cannot be used for making traditional modaks due to the small size of the cavity.
Best suited for making a batch of small-sized modaks at home. This wouldn’t be apt for making traditional modak as the cavity is much smaller. This is best for making coconut, khoya and date-nut modaks.
3. BRUSHFINCH Modak and Momos Plastic Mould Sacha – To Make Multiple Modaks In One Go
How does it work? This is very simple to use. All you need to do is grease the mould and place the mixture on both sides of the cavity. Cover and press it. Once you open it, three modaks will be ready in one go. Definitely not meant for traditional, stuffed and steamed modaks as the cavity space is not as big. The shape of the modak is symmetrical, small and elongated but the edges are not as clean.
The moulds are easy to use, clean and require a little more storage space than your single cavity moulds, ofcourse.
Product design – This is a sturdy plastic mould that can make three modaks at one time. Each side has 5 serrations (10 in total). The mould opens like a book and it has two sets of screws.
- Easy to clean.
- Makes three modaks in one go.
- Symmetrical, well-shaped modaks.
- Sturdy material.
- The edges of the modak are not as clean.
Best suited for making coconut, boondi, besan or khoya modaks.
4. The GEM Bakers Aluminium Modak Maker Mould – Sturdy & Durable
Like most moulds, the contraption needs to be greased, closed and stuffed from the bottom opening. The size is a little smaller and wouldn’t be ideal for making a steamed modak. Something with a single stuffing like coconut or boondi modak would be super-easy to make.
This is a single mould that makes elongated, beautiful, well-shaped modaks. Easy to wash as all the nooks and corners are accessible.
- Easy to clean and use.
- Well-shaped modaks.
- Sturdy and durable.
For single-stuffing modaks like coconut, khoya, besan or boondi.

5. C.P Global – Silicone Mould With 6 Cavities
This is a soft silicone mould with 6 cavities and is meant for experimental modaks like the ones made with chocolate. The silicone moulds are easy to use and clean. The cavity size is small and isn’t ideal for making usual modaks.
Moreover, even after washing the mould thoroughly, the smell of soap doesn’t really go away.
Unlike most plastic/aluminum moulds, it is not as easy to demould them. You definitely need skill to demould them without breaking.
- Limited usage
- Skill needed to demould them
- Even after cleaning, the smell of soap does not reduce.
Ideal for making chocolate modak.
6. NewQAluminium Modak Maker Machine
How does it work? Although this modak mould is large, the cavity size isn’t too large for preparing traditional modaks. Moreover, the shape and design of the mould is such that the modak made is wobbly. The base of the modak is slightly small and protruding which makes the sweet very unstable when kept on the plate. The mould is easy to clean and store.
Product design – The mould has a beautiful design on the exterior and 8 serrations per modak. Cavity depth is around 4 cm. This is not as sturdy as some of the other aluminum modak moulds we have tested. The mould is not dishwasher safe.
- Easy to clean.
- Storage space required is not a lot.
- Large mould.
- The material is not as sturdy.
- Base of the modak is wobbly.
- The cavity is smaller in comparison to the size of the mould, thus making it slightly tougher to make traditional modaks.
This is best suited for making big-sized modaks without stuffing.
