Summary

From the three flavors of tea we tried - Elaichi, Ginger and Masala, the elaichi tea was chosen as the Top Pick for its fresh cardamom aroma, flavor and homestyle consistency. We do not recommend the ginger and masala variants. Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix is a very convenient option for that anytime-anywhere chai experience. The stirrers inside truly help amp up the convenience aspect. The rating is for the elaichi tea.

Coffee premixes have been in the market for more than a decade, but tea premixes came into existence just a little while ago. A tea premix, like the coffee one, just requires hot water. Nothing else. It already contains milk, sugar, flavoring, and of course tea extract. Over time we have reviewed a lot of tea bags and tea premixes by different brands and while some have excelled that balance, some have been less than satisfactory.

We reviewed three flavors of Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix – Elaichi, Ginger, And Masala tea. These are instant tea premixes, and all you need is a cup of boiled water. Sounds really convenient, doesn’t it? But what about the flavor? We liked only one out of these three. Can you guess which one it is? Read on.

Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix Review

Price and packaging – All the flavors of Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix come in box packaging. Inside each box are 10 sachets along with wooden stirrers. Each sachet is 14 grams each. A box of 10 sachets is priced at Rs 140/-.

How to make it – Making instant tea with the Wagh Bakri Premix is extremely simple. As per the instructions given on the back of the box –

  • Pour Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix Sachet into a cup.
  • Add 90 ml hot water. Do not add boiling water.
  • Your favorite tea is ready.
In Process - Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix.

How we made it – We made the Wagh Bakri Instant Tea as per the instructions given on the pack which are rather simple. We did not add any extra sugar or milk to this. We noticed that all the premixed tea dissolved easily in water.

Our review was split into two stages – Dry inspection and tasting. During our dry inspection, we wanted to check for the aroma and texture of the premix. For our tasting, we made the instant chai as per the instructions. This was not a blind tasting.

During our dry inspection, we noticed that all the premixes have a very strong dairy whitener aroma. We could not smell anything apart from that. The premix powders are fine and are a mix of sugar, dairy whitener, and tea extract.

Quick Review Of Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix – Elaichi (Top Pick)

Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix - Elaichi Tea

Ingredients – Sugar, Dairy whitener (Milk solids + Sugar), Instant tea (6.5%) and Cardamom flavor.

Taste Test – We chose Wagh Bakri Instant Elaichi Tea as our Top Pick because out of all the three flavors this was the most aromatic and tastiest.

Elaichi (green cardamom) and milk tea is a classic combination in most Indian households where fresh pods of cardamom are crushed and added to the tea while boiling the water or after adding the chai patti. When you chew fresh cardamom, the outer bud and inner seeds have a very distinguishable eucalyptus, floral, and mildly citrusy taste. This cup of instant chai has flavors of both and tastes pretty close to a cup of homemade elaichi chai. The high sweetness of this instant tea might be an issue for people who like their tea with very little or no sugar.

Consistency-wise, the tea is very homestyle and isn’t too diluted or milky. The balance is just right. Unanimously, the Wagh Bakri Instant Elaichi Tea was chosen as our Top Pick for its fresh elaichi flavor.

Quick Review Of Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix – Masala

Tasting the Wagh Bakri Instant Masala Chai

Ingredients – Sugar, Dairy whitener (Milk solids + Sugar), Instant tea, and Masala flavor.

Taste Test – A masala chai needs to be fragrant, warming, and full of flavors of fresh spices like cloves, pepper, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, and more. All these spices in different combinations lend a wonderful aroma and taste to the chai cup. Sadly, the Wagh Bakri Instant Masala Tea lacks the masala aroma or taste. The list of ingredients mention ‘Masala flavor’ but not even a hint of masala was detected. If masala tea is what you’re looking for, we suggest you opt for a masala tea bag instead. Tea made using good quality instant tea bags is much more flavorful and the masala notes are not flat. They are more well-defined and full-bodied.

Quick Review Of Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix – Ginger

Instant Ginger Tea by Wagh Bakri

Ingredients – Sugar, Dairy whitener (Milk solids + Sugar), Instant tea (6.5%), Maltodextrin and Ginger flavor.

Taste Test – Wagh Bakri Ginger Instant Tea Premix after reconstitution has very dry ginger or sund/saunth powder like aroma and flavor. Fresh notes from one of the most beneficial ingredients in the Indian pantry – ginger –  are much more citrusy, and zingy and dried ginger notes give a very high peppery flavor which, in a cup of tea, might not be desirable. We definitely missed the fresh, zingy flavor and aroma of ginger in this instant tea.

Conclusion

Tea premixes can be a hit and miss if the flavoring is not correct. Another thing that might not work is the proportion of milk, tea, and sugar. If that balance is perfect, automatically the chai is tastier. Our Top Pick, the Wagh Bakri Elaichi Tea Premix nailed that balance and has a nice cardamom flavor. If you’re a fan of elaichi chai, you will like the Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix. Your general sugar tolerance level will determine whether or not the sweetness of this premixed tea is for you. The sugar level was a tad bit on the higher side for us.

Make sure you do not use your big mugs to make this tea. Stick to the 90 ml water suggestion. If you add more water to this premix you will end up with a diluted solution that doesn’t taste anywhere close to a cup of homemade chai. A single sachet makes a small, cutting chai with concentrated flavors.

These premixes might be good for small offices and travelling for when you just want that cup of chai. The  Wagh Bakri Instant Tea Premix packs in a lot of convenience and just requires a cup of hot water to make. We recommend the elaichi flavor. We have definitely had better masala and ginger tea premixes.
