SUPERB!
Summary
Sumeru Frozen Idli is a convenient, economic, beginner-friendly quick fix to meals that is also comparatively healthier. We give it the green light.
Steaming hots idlis with spoonfuls of chilled coconut chutney- nothing beats this pair of a filling, nutritious, and gut-friendly meal.
While RTE meals and frozen snacks are loved for the convenience they offer, quite often, the taste or texture (or both) aren’t right. Moreover, ‘frozen’ idlis are a relatively new entrant in this segment which is why our Team of researchers suggested the Sumeru Frozen Idli with Chutney review.

Our Review Factors
The following section discusses the parameters we set while reviewing Sumeru Frozen Idli with Chutney. Taste, texture, and convenience were the most significant parameters.
1. Taste
Idlis have an innate fermented-sourness. Plus, chutney, sambar, gun powder are often used to add some flavors.
Under this parameter, we tested the freshness and balance of salt.
2. Texture
When the rice to dal ratio is spot-on, idlis turn out to be soft, light, and spongy. How was our experience with Sumeru? Which method would we recommend, steaming or heating in a microwave?
3. Convenience
Quick and easy or a hassle to heat up? What do we think of Sumeru Frozen Idli?
4. Other Parameters
We also took into account the price, packaging, and shelf life of this RTE product.
Sumeru Frozen Idli With Chutney – Detailed Review
Price & Packaging
There were two packs inside the main pouch. One held the idlis and the other had the chutney. There were six idlis inside the pouch, each weighing approximately 40 grams. 240 grams (40 x 6) and 100 grams of chutney are priced at Rs 125/- with a 12-month shelf life.
Main Ingredients
Idli- rice (27%), black gram (11%), rice flakes, and iodized salt
Coriander chutney- water, coconut (18%), coriander leaves (13%), edible vegetable oil (sunflower), curry leaves, urad dal, green chilli, garlic, ginger, iodized salt, mustard seeds, spices, and condiments.
How we made it
The pack mentions this can be steamed or microwaved. We tried both methods.
Steamer
Remove idlis from the pouch, steam for 7-8 minutes
Microwave
Place frozen idlis in a microwave-safe plate, cover with a wet muslin cloth and microwave for 2-3 minutes. Alternatively, you can sprinkle some water on the frozen idlis and microwave for 2-3 minutes.
We steamed 4 idlis and microwaved the rest.
Taste & Texture
In the pre-cooked/frozen stage, the idlis had a white appearance and were medium-sized. They looked partially flat. There were no broken pieces. The chutney had to be placed at room temperature for 5-7 minutes before serving.
Our Experience
Steamer
The idlis tasted very fresh. They were lightly salted and had no synthetic aftertaste. Thumbs up. Once steamed, the idlis had turned quite soft and fluffy. The only drawback was that the corners were slightly harder and drier. Safe to say, this was almost as good as fresh homemade idlis. Another observation we made after comparing steamed idlis to frozen ones, is that they plumped up a bit. Plus, they had the natural, subtly sour aroma of fermented batter. This was a hit!
Microwave
Since the target audience for a product like this would be bachelors, paying guests, other individuals with only a few kitchen appliances, we heated the idlis in a microwave too.
The water does not evaporate completely, it condenses and we could see some droplets that had settled on the plate. The resultant idlis were relatively flatter and harder as compared to the steamer method. Therefore, we’d recommend steaming, if possible.
The chutney was flavorful. We saw some curry leaves, mustard seeds, and also Kashmiri red chillies. The coconut to coriander ratio was apt, no one ingredient overpowered the other. This tasted fresh, it was full of flavors, especially ginger and garlic. We quite liked the overall seasoning it had.
