SUPERB!

Summary

Of the eight variants we tried - Spicy Chicken, Cheesy Spicy, Vegetable, Pork, and Chilli Prawn were our favorite. The stuffing was seasoned beautifully and the mouthfeel was fairly good too. As indicated by the ratings, these variants were our collective favs.

Momos! Juicy, plump momos dunked in a spicy red chutney. They aren’t just street food. For most of us, momos are an emotion. Right? Momos can be steamed, fried, or pan-fried also.

Prasuma is a brand that gained extreme popularity during the 2020 lockdown phase in India when everyone was craving their favorite street food – Momos. We reviewed eight variants that won’t just get you drooling but also help you decide which pack of ready-to-eat momos matches your taste buds the most.

We also cooked using all four methods to see which is the best way to consume these without altering the texture.

Our Review Factors

What were we looking for? Momos are relished for their soft and juicy bite. A flavor-loaded filling, a thin chewy flour casing, and overall freshness- these were the core parameters of our Prasuma Momos review.

1. Flavor

‘Cheesy’, ‘Chilly’, ‘Desi’ are bold and distinct flavors. Does the flavor profile justify the labels?

2. Texture

Was the chicken juicy, the prawns soft but firm? What about mutton, was it chewy or rubbery? As for the vegetarian momos, we looked for fresh, soft, melt-in-the-mouth paneer, and well-cooked veggie stuffing. What about the cheese stuffing?

3. Convenience

Unannounced guests, untimely cravings- are these frozen momos a quick fix?

Is steaming the only method of preparation? Can these be fried? Which is the quickest method and does it work?

4. Other Parameters

Appearance

Broken, partially cracked, or straight up appetizing- how did the frozen momos look? Are these consistent in shape and size?

Packaging

Are these momos placed in a slotted tray? Is the pouch resealable?

Price

Compared to street vendors and restaurants, is a plate of Prasuma momos value for money?

Shelf Life

When stored under refrigeration, how long would these stay good for?

Prasuma Momos Flavours – Detailed Review

Mishry’s journey of reviewing Prasuma Momos started back in 2020, during the Covid-induced lockdown. Initially, we started by reviewing the Original Pork and Original Chicken variants. A year later, in 2021, we added Spicy Chicken and Vegetarian momos to this list.

We reviewed the Cheesy Spicy, Chilli Prawn, Classic Mutton, and Spicy Chicken variants this year.

Do we still like them? Has their quality and filling-casing ratio changed?

Before diving into the individual reviews, the following are the common aspects across variants.

  • The momos are offered in pouches of 8/10/24 pieces.
  • The graphics on the packaging are appetizing.
  • The overall feel of this packaging is quite premium.
  • Dips/chutneys are inside the pack.
  • All variants can be heated in a microwave or can be steamed, pan-fried, or deep-fried. We tested all four methods.

The deep fried momos have a crunchy exterior.

Texture

Just perfect. The chicken was soft and juicy, while the casing was thin. This not only let the flavors of the filling get the limelight but also ensured there were no bland-doughy bites.

Taste

Let us begin by saying if you’re planning on skipping this variant due to the ‘Spicy’ tag- do not. The spice levels are balanced. Overall, these momos are delicious and one of the best amongst Prasuma’s range of frozen momos.

The seasoning is apt and the texture of chicken is JUICY.

  • Thumbs up for the balanced proportion of casing and filling.
  • Tender juicy, chicken filling.
  • Very well-seasoned.
  • The spice is balanced.

Soft, juicy, succulent, it’s kind of hard to believe these momos were frozen. If you’re looking for well-seasoned chicken momos, we suggest these.

2. Cheesy Spicy

Price & Packaging

A 24-piece pack is priced at Rs 295 and has a shelf life of nine months. Our pack had no broken pieces. Though a few were stuck to one another, they were separated fairly easily. You get four packs of sauce/dips with this.

Main Ingredients

Cheese, cabbage, refined wheat flour, butter, sweet corn, carrot, refined soybean oil, salt, spices and condiments, flavor enhancer (E621). The pack mentions that since their momos contain MSG, it should ideally not be consumed by pregnant women and those under 12 months of age.

Calories (per 100 grams)

207.35 Kcal, 24.31 grams of carbohydrates, 5.5 gram of protein, and 9.79 grams of fat.

No broken pieces, yay!

Storage Instructions

Under refrigeration, below 18 degrees.

How We Made Them?

We pan-fried and steamed these momos.

Texture

The flour casing was soft, thin, and did not have that doughy bite, thumbs up. The ratio of the casing to filling is apt, and there were no empty pockets. The cheese had melted beautifully and enhanced the overall texture. The corn had plumped up well.

Taste

Perfectly labeled Cheesy Spicy, this is primarily cheesy, followed by a medium spice level. There is a noticeable ginger flavor too. All ingredients used are fresh. The corn kernels add a slight sweetness, and the seasoning is just right.

Our take on the cooking method

While the flavors were more or less the same, pan-frying the momos made the casing crisp from the bottom while steaming kept them soft.

  • The filling is well-seasoned.

This is how the momos were packed.

Texture

The casing is paper-thin and does not feel doughy or thick around the edges. Post-steaming, it softened well. The meat was soft and had a pleasing bite. The onion bits added a nice crunch to an overall smooth meaty momo.

Taste

In a word- DELICIOUS. The meat stuffing had a subtle smokey flavor that uplifted the experience. The seasoning was spot on. The dip is exceptionally flavorful, it struck a nice balance between sweet and tangy.

A batch of steamed vegetable momos by Prasuma.

Taste test – People who say that “Vegetarian momos aren’t even momos.”, might want to take back their words. Unlike a lot of cabbage dominated momos we consume at local joints, these have a mix of carrots and paneer in them. For vegetarians or people who do not want to eat meat-filled momos, these are refreshingly tasty. All the veggies and paneer taste nice together, and the mildly seasoned momos can be dunked into a bowl of spicy sauce. The casing, as usual, is thin and consistent.

  • The casing was thin and consistent.
  • This was a refreshing take on vegetable momos.
  • Packed in a resealable pouch.
  • We liked how calories per piece had been mentioned.

Not a fan of meaty momos? Tired of cabbage-dominant stuffings? We’re sure you’ll like Prasuma Vegetable momos.

5. Chilli Prawn

Price & Packaging

A pack holding eight pieces is priced at Rs 299/-.

Main Ingredients

Prawn, refined wheat flour (maida), water, onion, butter, spices & condiments, flavor enhancer (E621), emulsifier (E475), and acidity regulator (E322)

Calories (per 100 grams)

202.24 Kcal, 18.7 grams of carbohydrates, 10.52 grams of protein, and 9.48 grams of fat.

The Chilli Prawn momos were offered in a tray.

Texture

The flour casing was similar to the first variant, no complaints here. As for the prawn filling, it was chunky but smooth. The prawn chunks added a chewy, cartilaginous bite.

Taste

This variant featured a fairly good flavor profile. Typically, prawns have a delicate flavor. In these momos, the prawns had absorbed the flavors really well. Correctly labeled as chili prawn – Of all the variants we tried, this had the boldest, most spicy flavor.

Flavor- 3.5/5
Texture- 3.5/5
  • Thin casing, juicy filling.
  • Ratio of casing-filling is apt.
  • The tag of ‘chilli’ is justified.
  • Prawns have a chunky bite and bold flavors.

Who can say no to momos with a chunky, flavorful filling? If you love all things spicy, you should give Prasuma Prawn Momos a go.

6. Original Chicken

Price & Packaging

We ordered the 24-piece pouch which can be resealed with a ziplock. It was priced at Rs 295/-.

Main Ingredients

Chicken meat, refined wheat flour, onion, butter, water, ginger, coriander, salt, spices & condiments, flavor enhancer (INS 631).

Calories (per 100 grams)

205.3 Kcal, 21.4 grams of carbohydrates, 8.37 grams of protein, and 9.58 grams of fat.

Here is a look at the Original Chicken momos.

Texture

The flour casing was consistent throughout. We steamed a batch and deep-fried another. It was thin and didn’t mask the flavor of the filling. The chicken had that distinct juiciness indicating it was well cooked. In both the cooking methods, the freshness and plump bite was retained.

Taste

The momos had a flavorful bite. Since the casing to filling ratio is balanced, there were no bland bites.

  • The filling was well-seasoned.

  • The chicken had a juicy bite.

7. Desi Chicken

Price & Packaging

A 24-piece pack is priced at Rs 295/-. The pack mentions how the brand uses hormone and antibiotic-residue-free chicken.

Main Ingredients

Chicken meat, refined wheat flour, cabbage, onion, chilli, salt, spices & condiments, flavor enhancer (E621) and MSG.

Calories (per 100 grams)

216.2 Kcal, 21.37 grams of carbohydrates, 8.65 grams of protein, and 10.68 grams of fat.

The stuffing was under seasoned in this variant.

Texture

Just like the above variants we reviewed, the casing was thin and not doughy. However, the filling to casing ratio was quite low. The juiciness of chicken wasn’t present here. It was dry when bit into which negatively impacted the experience.

Taste

Since this is labeled Desi, we anticipated it to be loaded with lip-smacking spices that define Indian cuisine. Unfortunately, it was not. The spice was low and so was the overall seasoning. The most prominent flavor was that of coriander.

Flavor- 3/5
Texture- 3/5
  • The casing was thin, just as preferred.
  • Hormone and antibiotic-residue-free chicken is used.
  • Low casing to filling ratio.
  • The chicken was not juicy.
  • The flavors weren’t up to the mark and it was under seasoned.

8. Classic Mutton

Price & Packaging

The 10-piece box had two slots, one held the momos and the other had the chutneys.

Main Ingredients

Mutton meat, refined wheat flour, cabbage, chilli, mustard oil, spice & condiments, flavor enhancer (E621)

E621 is monosodium glutamate. It enhances the salty flavor in savory foods but has a lower sodium content than salt. However, too much of this additive may lead to insomnia.

Calories (per 100 grams)

211.7 Kcal, 20.37 grams of carbohydrates, 7.85 grams of protein, and 10.98 grams of fat.

The distinct texture of mutton wasn't present.

Texture

Compared to the first four variants we tried, the casing felt significantly thicker. The mutton was slightly dry and lacked the soft, melt-in-your-mouth bite.

Taste

This was quite disappointing, in terms of flavor. The filling wasn’t well-seasoned. Due to this, it felt like there was more of the casing and less of the filling, despite the ratio being fairly decent.

Flavor- 3/5
Texture- 2.5/5
  • The momos and chutneys are packed quite well.
  • The casing was thicker.
  • The texture of the mutton was dry and undesirable.
  • The filling was barely seasoned and lacked flavor.

How Is The Momo Chutney?

The consistency and taste of the sauce was more on the lines of a tomato ketchup than the spicy-chilli chutney we generally expect. The taste was a little sweet and tomatoey. While this is tasty, we missed the red chili, garlicky-oily momo sauce.

The 10-piece pack has 2 sachets of the sauce and the 24-piece pack has 4 sachets.

Which Cooking Method Is The Best For Prasuma Momos?

Steaming the momos –

This method gave us a soft, juicy, and delicate outcome. This method takes the longest.

Microwaving the momos –

Quick, but doesn’t really accentuate the plus points of the momos. The outer casing dries and hardens a bit, even when we add water before heating them.

Deep frying the momos –

CRISPY on the outside and juicy on the inside. We really liked the deep-fried momos, but these can get a bit too oily.

Pan frying the momos –

This method was apt to enjoy the best of both worlds. The crisp bottom and the soft upper skin of the momos were drool-worthy. Neither the filling nor the casing dried up.

Now coming to which cooking method did we find the best? Pan-frying, hands down. Even though most of us were partial towards the steaming method before, the pan-fried momos were a game-changer. We do not recommend the microwaving method as much as the outer casing can get a bit dry and hard. The filling does not dry up, but the overall experience of eating a juicy momo definitely lowers a bit with this method.
