Our Review Factors
What were we looking for in our Organic Roots Jain Khichdi review?
Taste and texture were the key review-forming parameters. Since this product calls itself ‘Jain’, we gauged the ingredient list. The aforementioned factors combined, we rated this on convenience.
1. Taste
Khichdi defines comfort and is an amalgamation of rice, dal, fats, and seasoning. Are the flavors balanced? Do they taste fresh? Too spicy? Heavy on salt? Or barely seasoned?
How does this RTE khichdi taste?
2. Texture
A mish-mash texture, nor too solidified or too soupy- khichdi generally has such texture.
Here we gauged, if the spices were added whole, crushed, or powdered. What about the premix to water proportion suggested by the brand, was it apt or did it need some adjustment?
3. Convenience
The box of premix and some hot water- are these the only components you need to relish a meal?
Cutlery, some garnish- are these elements sorted?
4. Nutrition Quotient
Jain cuisine is typically devoid of onion and garlic. We scanned the ingredient list to learn more on the ingredients and also get an idea about the macronutrients.
5. Other Parameters
Non-tasting parameters like price, packaging, shelf life were discussed under this parameter.
Organic Roots Jain Khichdi – Detailed Review
Price + Packaging
The khichdi premix comes in a carton. Inside this carton, there’s a sealed pouch and a wooden spoon. It holds 55 grams of content and is priced at Rs 149/- with a shelf life of 10 months.
Main Ingredients
Rice, Toor dal (arhar), Moong dhuli dal (Yellow split gram), Tomato, Potato, Cauliflower, Cumin whole, Coriander powder, Turmeric powder, Red chilli powder, Garam masala powder, Salt, Coriander leaves, Green chilli, Cold pressed vegetable oil, Cow desi ghee are all the ingredients that go in the making.
It is a clean ingredient list with all Jain-friendly ingredients. Thumbs up!
Do note that some Jain Vegetarians prohibit consumption of root vegetables like potatoes as well.
How did we make this?
As instructed on the pack, we emptied the contents into the carton, added boiled water (approximately 230 ml) until the mark, stirred it well, and let this sit for three minutes.
We stirred it once again before tasting too.
Aroma + Appearance
The khichdi premix had a generous quantity of short, coated rice grains. We could also see some potato chunks. These ingredients were covered in a dry powder that had a masaledar aroma. It was quite homestyle.
Taste + Texture
The carton does mention that consistency can be altered as desired, by adding more or less water. However, we added water upto the mark, and three minutes later, we had a semi-solid, not too flowy or too thick khichdi. Initially, it was slightly loose but as it cooled down, the starch from the rice helped thicken it. The dal was blitz and was not a smooth paste, neither did it have a bite. The potatoes had a starchy bite, but overall, this felt quite dry. Other veggies did not really have a distinguishing texture.
Like texture, we could not taste other vegetables either. Salt was added adequately, no issues there. The spice level was moderate to high and it comes from the warmth of garam masalas. Right towards the end of the bite, we could taste the innate flavor of ghee, it was fresh. All-in-all, it was fresh, flavorful, and had the homestyle touch to it.
What can be improved? The texture of the potatoes.
Everything else works well. For those who feel the heat is too high, can pair the khichdi with curd.
