SUPERB!

Summary

MTR Upma comes in a dry powder form. The cooked upma is slightly sticky, but tasty. It has perfect salt levels and does not feel heavy on the palate. The chana dal adds a nice crunch to the upma. Overall, it is a nice breakfast option.

Breakfast as we know is the most important meal of the day. Not only does a wholesome breakfast provide sustained energy throughout the day but it also helps replenish the supply of glucose in the body.

Due to our fast-paced and fast-food-based lifestyles, preparing a nutritious breakfast is a challenge. Most of us tend to skip breakfast at such times. (somedays the five-minute snooze costs us our breakfast, yes we are guilty of this too!)

The option is not to give up on breakfast completely, but to find alternatives that work for you. And this is where ready-to-eat options, now available in the markets in abundance, come into play. MTR is a brand that has, for decades, created premixes that make it easy to cook south-Indian delicacies like dosa, idli, and sambhar at home. MTR also has a handy range of ready-to-cook or instant breakfast foods. The MTR upma mix is a quick-cooking breakfast option that is made of sooji/rava, also known as semolina.

For our MTR plain upma mix review, we purchased the 170-gram pack of the same. The parameters that formed our review were –  visual appeal, taste, texture, convenience, price, ease of cooking, etc.

MTR Plain Upma Mix – Everything You Need To Know

The MTR plain upma mix is a ready-to-cook meal option that comes in powdered form.

Along with semolina, we noticed Bengal gram dal (chana dal), curry leaves, and mustard seeds in the premix.

The instructions provided on the back of the pack are relatively simple and can be easily followed by beginners too.

As the name suggests, MTR plain upma mix does not contain vegetables.

What we would recommend here is to replace the oil with ghee. Not only will it enhance the taste of your meal but adding ghee gives a better texture and an even better aroma.

Here are the parameters that helped us form a detailed MTR plain upma mix review.

1. Ingredients

The primary MTR upma ingredients include 75% semolina, edible vegetable oil, salt, Bengal gram dal, green chilli, ginger, curry leaves, mustard, salt, and sugar.

It is recommended to add vegetables like beans, carrots, and par-boiled peas along with roasted nuts like cashews and peanuts.

Based on our experience, we would recommend adding blanched vegetables to avoid the raw taste and texture. In addition to this, we added some roasted cashews and unsalted peanuts to the MTR plain upma mix.

We strongly feel adding ghee in place of oil would enhance the overall experience of this meal.

2. Taste

The MTR plain upma mix tastes a lot like homemade sooji upma. The salt and sugar added to the powder are well balanced. This combination makes for good seasoning.

A blend of palm oil and palm kernel oil has been used in the MTR upma mix. This oil has a raw taste.

We could see tiny specs of curry leaves throughout the bowl. The curry leaves added a delicious taste and aroma to our meal.

3. Texture

The MTR plain upma mix offers two textures. The first one is from the soft semolina followed by crunchy bites coming from the chana dal added to the upma mix.

Apart from these, as mentioned on the pack, we added some roasted nuts- cashews and peanuts and some blanched vegetables. We added peas, carrots, and beans.

The pack does not mention blanching the veggies. We blanched them as we anticipated the raw taste from these vegetables might ruin the entire taste of the MTR upma mix.

During and after the cooking stage, this MTR plain upma mix  had a loose and almost runny consistency. This did not affect the overall dish whatsoever.

Once it was cooled, the upma started taking the shape of the bowl.

4. Price

The 170-gram pack of the MTR plain upma mix we ordered is priced at Rs 45/-

The MTR upma breakfast mix is also available in a 500-gram pack that prepares 560 grams and is ideally recommended to be divided into 2-3 servings.

5. Nutrition Facts

100 grams of the MTR plain upma mix provide 411 calories with 10 grams of protein. You also get 68 grams of carbohydrates with 3.75 grams of dietary fiber.

In addition to this, 100 grams of the MTR upma mix provides 11 grams of fats.

6. Net Quantity

500 grams of the MTR upma mix prepare 650 grams of upma.

This quantity is adequate for 2-3 servings based on individual appetite.

7. Recipe Options

You can prepare the MTR plain upma mix as it is. The pack contains some chana dal that adds the bite factor.

Alternatively, you could also add some blanched vegetables like carrots, beans, and some boiled peas. This will not only add to the crunch but also enhance the visual appeal of your meal.

To further enhance the crunchiness in your upma, you can add some roasted peanuts and cashews. It is recommended you add unsalted nuts since salt is already present in the MTR plain upma mix.

You must read the measurements and proportions given at the back of the pack. The upma mix to boiling water proportion is 1: 2.5. For every one part of upma mix, you need to add two and a half parts water.

8. Preparation Time

The MTR upma mix takes under five minutes to be served.

You need to add the required quantity of the upma mix to boiling water with a tablespoon of oil. We recommend adding ghee.

Stir this mix for 3-4 minutes. You would notice a runny, slightly lumpy  mixture.

MTR Plain Upma Mix – Detailed Review

We tasted a homestyle rava upma during our MTR upma mix review. This quick-cooking meal option is quite light on the tummy.

Since semolina is a complex carbohydrate, it digests slower as compared to simple carbohydrates. The lower the glycemic load, the more sustained are the levels of energy.

This is why we think the MTR plain upma mix is an excellent breakfast option.

The MTR upma mix is packed in powdered form with some chana dal and curry leaves. It has a decent balance of seasonings and the salt added is decent too.

All you need to do is add the right proportion of ingredients (upma mix and water). You can keep this meal as simple or as fancy as you’d like.

You could add some veggies and roasted peanuts for some color and crunch.
