Best Mango Pickle Brands in India – Which is the Tastiest?

Pickle-making is a dying art. It was a skill that was passed on from one generation to another. Isn’t it just so lovely to get your hands on some homemade deliciousness as an accompaniment to a plate of dal–chawal. As kids, most of our terraces were laced with ceramic martbaans, stuffed with yummy achaars, ready to go to the neighbors and relatives. Now, it is a rare sight. Slowly fewer and fewer people are making achaars at home and prefer store-bought ones.

We love mango pickles so much that we could write a ballad about it. No, seriously. India is a diverse country and so is the art of pickle making. No two parts of our country make the same flavored mango pickle. Some add heeng and fennel seeds, some add onion and mustard seeds. Some have big chunks, some shred them. But does the variation in flavor make one better than the other?

We tasted nine brands of mango pickles easily available in the Indian market to find out the best mango pickle in India. so which mango pickle is the best? After careful selection, we have our Top Picks for you. The best mango pickle in India is…

We tasted 9 best Indian pickle brands that are available. After careful selection, we have picked up the Best Mango Pickle in India for you :

1) Top Pick : Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle

mother's recipe punjabi mango pickle
Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle

Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle is tangy with a mustard oil-base and onion seeds.

Why Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle is our top pick

Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle has a dominant saunf and kalonji flavor. The taste is a delightful balance of tang and sourness, a hint of chilli and oodles of flavor.

The ratio of masala to mango chunks is managed wonderfully – there are more mango pieces than the masala.

Despite adequate masala, the mango pieces maintain their body and firmness. Unlike some brands in the review, the mango pieces have a bite to them.

The pieces of mangoes were the largest amongst the contenders.

2) Top Pick – South Indian Style: Eastern Mango Thokku Pickle

Eastern Mango Thokku Pickle

Eastern Mango Thokku Pickle is wonderfully balanced with a hit of garlic.

Why Eastern Mango Thokku Pickle is our top pick

Eastern’s Mango Thokku Pickle is spicy and dominated by the flavors of curry leaves and garlic.

Thokku as a style means a grated pickle, so as expected the mango pieces are shredded to thin slivers that hold up their taste and texture.

The balance of the amount of mango to the masala is extremely balanced and the flavor of the garlic marries beautifully with the sourness of the mangoes and the curry leaves.

It is extremely versatile and would taste great with paranthas, idlis and rice.

3) Also Recommended: Sri Sri Tattva Mango Pickle

Sri Sri Tattva Mango Pickle

We recommend Sri Sri Tattva Mango Pickle for its homestyle taste. There is lots of flavor in this one, exactly what you expect from a good aam ka achaar.

4) Also Recommended: Nilon’s Khana Khazana Mango Pickle

Nilon’s Khana Khazana Mango Pickle

We also recommend Nilon’s Khana Khazana Mango Pickle due to its home-style taste.

Our Review Process

We reviewed all the best Indian Mango pickle brands spread over two days. We took two days to review the pickles because tasting them over and over again, side-by-side was overpowering our palates.

We did not differentiate our brand selection on the basis of which part of the mango was used to make the pickle. Example – Some used thinly slivered mango pieces for the pickle while some brands used just the flesh and skin. Some had used the hard mango seed (guthli) while pickling and some had removed them.

Day 1 – Stand Alone Tasting

One day one we tasted all nine pickle brands by themselves with nothing to support the flavor like rice or paranthas. We tested for the appearance, bite, oil quality and of course taste. Five brands were chosen to enter the day 2 process.

  • Eastern Mango Thokku
  • Sri Sri Tattva Mango Pickle
  • Nilon’s Khana Khazana Mango Pickle
  • Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle
  • Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khazana Punjabi Mango Pickle

Day 2 – Tasting with food

On day two, we took the five selected brands and tasted them with plain home cooked arhar dal and steamed rice. Post that, we tasted all the achaars with curd rice to help the flavor of the achaar shine through.

All the contenders were worthy and it was so hard for us to pick a winner. The only reason Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khazana Punjabi Mango Pickle didn’t make it till the top was due to the bite of the mango pieces. The skin on the mangoes had come apart because it was already so soft.

From here, we decided on our winners.

2) Who Is This Review For?

The pickle making industry has caught up with times and introduced large varieties of pickles in the market – chilies, amla, raw turmeric, lemon, carrots, and whatnot. But what remains a favorite, pan India, is our national fruit – Mango. In the achaar race, there is no competition between mango pickle and the others. It is one of the most preferred fruits used for pickling.

This review is for all mango pickle lovers who do not know the art of pickling themselves. This is also for everyone who is away from family and needs a touch of home with their boring plate of food. If you love to add a tangy accompaniment to your meals, our mango pickle review will surely come in handy.

3) The Parameters – How We Reviewed

The basis of any review relies on taste, that’s a given. Apart from that we reviewed the mango pickles on three other parameters – Size and body of the cut mangoes, ratio of the masala to the mangoes and type of oil used.

1) Size and body of cut mangoes

The size in which the mango pieces are cut plays a crucial role in the overall experience of eating the pickle. The ‘bite’ of the pickle is important too. The mango pieces should not be completely raw, but not soft enough that they become mushy and give you an overall chutney-like consistency.

2) Ratio of masala and mangoes

We answered a common question – Does the mango piece have it’s own individuality or is it lost in the masalas? If the masala is too much, the mangoes are stray. If too less, then what is the whole point of an achaar?

3) Type of oil used

We did not consider the amount of oil used because pickles are supposed to be oily. The type of oil used affects the flavor of the achaar. Most commonly used oils were mustard oil and rice bran.

4) Taste

The prime deciding factor was the balance of taste. We wanted to see if the pickles do justice to its own set of ingredients or are they flavorless. What was considered was the amount of tang and sourness (what you usually expect out of an achaar).

Mother’s Recipe Punjabi Mango Pickle Rs 105/- 400 grams Mustard oil, Cottonseed oil
Sri Sri Tattva Mango Pickle Rs 70/- 300 grams Mustard oil
