#FirstImpression of Haldiram’s Minute Khana – Medu Vada Instant Mix

Haldiram’s Minute Khana – Medu Vada has an appealing bright pink packaging. The pack is reasonably priced at Rs 130/- and specifies that one 500 gram pack can make 30-35 medu vadas.

On the back of the pack, a clear set of instructions on how to make these vadas has been given. These instructions are easy to understand even if you are making vadas for the first time. No technical words were used that could confuse a newbie. We prepared the batter and cooked the vadas according to the instructions given.

Haldiram’s Medu Vadas Instant Mix Review: The vadas were made according to the instructions given on the pack.

The ingredients – When you open the pack, you can actually see some of the ingredients like green chilies and jeera. Usually, these vadas are made with urad dal (base) and rice flour (for crispiness). These vadas are made with refined flour (maida) and use palm oil too, which would explain the texture related issues.

The texture – Haldiram’s Medu Vada had a crisp exterior but we were disappointed by the dry texture on the inside. The vadas were so dense that we could actually taste the flour. When you are waiting for a medu vada, you expect a light, airy and fluffy texture and not a dense heap. Sadly, the texture did not work for us.

The taste – When you bite into these vadas, you get a hint of ginger in the beginning and a black pepper kick at the end. The flavor of cumin (jeera) is dominant. We felt the taste was average.

Takeaway – We feel that these vadas could have been lighter and wish they had some fluffiness to them. The whole experience of eating a medu vada was definitely missing.
