We will not consider this frozen food as fast-friendly due to the presence of additives. Although we liked the crisp texture of the tikkis, these definitely need improvement taste-wise.

Our Review Factors

What do we expect? We were looking for a crisp and delicious upvas-friendly sabudana tikki.

Sabudana tikkis are a popular and fast-friendly fried Indian snack made using sabudana (sago), roasted peanuts, boiled potatoes, cumin, salt and green chillies.

Our review factors for Haldiram’s Sabudana Tikki are as follows:

1. Taste

A classic sabudana tikki is seasoned with salt, green chillies and some crushed black pepper. How was our experience with Haldiram’s Sabudana Tikki? Does this tikki have the correct balance of simple flavors?

2. Texture

The texture should be crisp and crunchy. Additionally, it should not soak too much oil while frying. The sabudana should be soft but slightly chewy. How was our experience with Haldiram’s Sabudana Tikki?

Haldiram’s Sabudana Tikki  – Detailed Review

How was our experience with Haldiram’s Sabudana Tikki? This section covers all the details including product details, pros, cons and how we tested.

Product Inspection

Haldiram’s Sabudana Tikki comes in a mini carton box. Our review pack of 320 gm is priced at Rs. 150. It contains 20 units of the tikki.

Inside the carton, the tikkis are securely wrapped in a sealed blue pouch. None of the sabudana tikkis were broken.

Appearance-wise, we could spot a lot of cumin, a few coriander leaves and chopped green chillies. Additionally, toasted crushed peanuts, sago and potato flakes were also noticeable.

Thickness wise, these sabudana tikkis are medium-sized. They are neither too thick nor too thin.

Method Of Preparation

The pack states that there are two methods to prepare these tikkis – deep fry and oven bake.

Do make note of these points:

  • Cook without thawing.
  • Do not freeze if defrosted.

How did we make it?

For our review process, we prepared these tikkis using the deep-frying method. We gently simmered them on low flame. It took about 10 minutes for the tikkis to turn golden brown and crisp. All the tikkis were fried uniformly.

Our Findings

Taste & Texture

First things first let’s talk about the taste. What works? It is a medium spicy tikki with a well balanced salt level.  The earthy flavor of cumin was noticeable in random bites and tasted lovely. The peanuts are roatsed well and add a nice crunch.

What does not? The tikkis don’t work as well because they lack freshness. Although this has coriander leaves and red chilli powder, they do not enhance the taste in any way. These are crisp, undoubtedly, but the tikkis soaked excessive oil while deep frying.

Overall, it does not come close to a homestyle tikki. We would have appreciated it if it was slightly more flavorful, spicy or had a herby freshness. Another aspect that made this lag is the ingredient list. This contains emulsifiers & acidity regulators that might not be fast friendly.

Additionally, homemade sabudana tikkis prepared during fast use ghee or groundnut oil as a source of fat. This uses refined oil (cotton seed oil) which is not something you use during your vrat.

These tikkis were super crisp on the outside.

Wrap-Up

Haldiram’s Minute Khana Sabudana Tikki turns out super crisp and is seasoned with the right amount of salt. The fact that this doesn’t taste as fresh or vibrant and soaks up a lot of oil is a downer. We wouldn’t recommend this if you’re fasting as there are a lot of ingredients that may not be ideal to consume during Navratri.
