Our Review Factors

What are we looking for? We are looking for rotis that heat up quickly, are soft, and come close to that of a homestyle roti.

Our review factors for Haldiram’s Ready To Eat Roti are as follows:

1. Taste

Any typical homemade roti is seasoned with salt. The core focus of this parameter is the freshness and balanced salt level.

Additionally, homemade phulka rotis are usually consumed within the same day. These being packaged ones, did we observe any stale or off-putting taste?

2. Texture

An ideal texture of any roti should be soft and fluffy. If your rotis puff up while heating, it is a sign that the dough is kneaded well and the texture is on point.

Inside the pack, there is a thin plastic sheet placed between two rotis. Because of this, the rotis did not stick to each other. Full marks here!

Appearance

Appearance-wise, these are thin and medium-sized round rotis when raw. On cooking, it appears similar to a homestyle roti with brown specs.

Method Of Preparation

Haldiram’s Phulka Roti is a frozen food item. Depending on your ease, you can heat these phulkas using a stovetop or in a microwave.

Firstly, remove the phulka from the bag and peel off the plastic sheet. Here are the instructions to follow for heating these phulkas. The steps are the same as mentioned on the pack:

Stove Top Method

  • Place the phulka on a preheated non-stick pan (tawa) and heat for about 30 seconds, flipping once.
  • Turn it over and repeat the process until both surfaces become soft.
  • Remove from the pan when thoroughly heated and serve hot.

Microwave Method

  • Place in a microwavable closed container and heat on a high setting for 20 seconds.

How We Made It?

To understand the taste and texture better, we heated these rotis using both – tawa and microwave. The roti was sticking to the hot tawa when we heated them. The rotis cooked on tawa turned out better than the ones heated in the microwave.

Following the instructions, we microwaved the rotis for 20 seconds at high settings. However, it ended up having an unpleasant raw flavor. Another downside was that the phulka started to harden once as soon as it reached room temperature.

Hence, we highly recommend you heat these rotis on a tawa.

Taste & Freshness

Taste-wise, Haldiram’s Phulka Roti has a homestyle touch. It tastes super fresh. The best part about these rotis is that there is no raw taste of atta. Neither do they taste stale or artificial. Thumbs up! Additionally, the aroma of these rotis was fresh. The flavor of wheat was prominent here.

The ingredient list mentions the use of iodized salt but its presence is not prominent.

Texture

Texture-wise, these rotis are soft and do not feel chewy. But this was limited only till the time they were hot. Even when it comes to homemade rotis, these taste best when served hot. Hence, we suggest you have these ready-to-eat phulkas as soon as they are heated up.

A point of appreciation here is that these are not dry, nor do they feel heavy on the palette.

While heating the rotis, we observed that these do not puff up like homemade phulka. The reason for this could be the excess moisture content since these are kept frozen.
