Summary

Haldiram Instant Mix Coconut Chutney offers exceptional convenience. The bold coconut flavor, the chunky, shredded texture- we quite liked this.

This nutty dip is always seen alongside idli, dosa, uttappam, vada, and other unconventional snacks like suji chilas and cutlets as well.

It’s coconut chutney, cheers if you guessed it right! But do you know the LENGTHY process that goes in the making. You could always get some from your favourite South Indian café or, even better, opt for an instant fix. This Haldiram’s Instant Mix Coconut Chutney powder review explores whether or not this is possible.

Our Review Factors

What are we looking for? A fresh coconut chutney with a homestyle taste and texture.

Taste and texture were the leading factors of our Haldiram Coconut Chutney review. We also gauged the ingredients, the nutrition value, and the overall convenience. Can this be a good pairing with idlis and dosas?

1. Taste

Have fresh coconuts been used? What did the flavor tell us? What about characteristic southern flavors like mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chillies? Was the nuttiness, slight bitterness of the seeds, herbal notes of curry leaves, and smokey pungency of red chillies prominent?

2. Texture

Coconut chutney shouldn’t be like a smooth paste. The shredded, chunky texture, the crackling curry leaves, the roasted mustard seeds- all work towards elevating the texture.

How did Haldiram’s mix fare? Was the water to powder proportion suggested apt?

Taste and texture, together, also help us gauge freshness.

3. Convenience

In addition to this instant mix powder, what other ingredients do we need from the pantry? Is the list long? Does it make preparing coconut chutney from scratch seem like the better option?

4. Other Parameters

The price and packaging, shelf life, ingredients used were also considered.

Haldiram’s Instant Mix Coconut Chutney – Detailed Review

Price + Packaging

This chutney power is packed in Haldiram’s classic red green packing. It is not resealable. One pack holds 160 grams and is priced at Rs 90/- It has a shelf life of nine months.

Main Ingredients

Dehydrated coconut shreds (62%), roasted Bengal gram flour, iodized salt, split Bengal gram, mustard seeds, dehydrated green chilli, ginger power, edible vegetable oil (sunflower), red chilli, curry leaves, (INS 320) preservative.

More than half of the ingredients comprise dehydrated coconut, thumbs up for this. All ingredients were nothing but a green flag, except INS 320.

What is INS 320, why is it in my chutney?

INS 320, also known as Butylated Hydroxanisole, is typically added to fat-rich packaged foods to prevent them from going bad or developing stale smells. At permitted low levels, this is considered safe.

How we made it?

Keeping the water to powder ratio mentioned on the pack, we took 50 grams of the powder and mixed it in 65-68 ml of water. This was gradually added, stirred well, and set aside for five minutes. The following sub-sections shed light on our experience with it.

A look at the dry powder.

Aroma + Appearance

Fresh and coconut-dominant- that’s how the aroma was.

As for the appearance, it had the classic off-white color with a tinge of pastel green and we could see the mustard seeds and some curry leaves.

Taste + Texture

This had a thick but flowy consistency. It was easily dippable in idlis/dosas. As for the texture, the coconut flakes created a desirable mouthfeel while the mustard seeds and roasted dal added a lovely crunch.

The innate flavor of coconut is so strong, it overpowers all other ingredients. Now, this is not a drawback because you’d want coconut chutney to taste like COCONUTS. But this may be overwhelming for some.

The seasoning is spot-on! It has a balanced, natural sweetness of coconut meat with a subtle spice kick, a mild bitterness of mustard seeds, and the freshness of curry leaves.

This was aromatic and visually pleasing too.
The water to powder ratio suggested was on point.
