SUPERB!

Summary

Gran’s Goodness Millet Chocolate cake premix has a commendable texture for a millet cake. The liberty of adjusting the sweetness and preparing it with eggs or making a vegan version were also appreciated.

Cake premixes are an efficient way to get a headstart on the baking process. Without collecting and intricately measuring ingredients, all you need to do is mix the premix with milk/oil/eggs, as suggested.

Our Review Factors

In our Gran’s Goodness Millet Chocolate Cake premix review, we set out to find how different it is from a refined wheat flour-based cake. How are the flavors and textures impacted? Moreover, is it truly convenient?

1. Taste

Since this is a chocolate-flavored premix, we tasted the cake for its decadence. What type of chocolate has been used?

Does the millet-based flour mix impart nutty flavors?

2. Texture

While proportions and the technique of incorporating wet and dry ingredients governs the final texture, typically cakes must have an airy, light, and spongy bite.

Can a millet-based cake mirror the same?

3. Convenience

How many ingredients does it call for from your pantry? Can you bake the cake on a stove? Or just in a microwave?

4. Nutrition Quotient

Main Ingredients

We checked the ingredient list for the quality of sweetener and fats used. Does the brand specify the ratios of flours used?

Is a slice of this gluten-free cake lower in calories than a regular counterpart? What about the macronutrient distribution?

Does this come in a pouch or a carton? Is it resealable?

How long can this premix be stored for in the dry stage?

Gran’s Goodness Millet Chocolate Cake Premix – Detailed Review

Price & Packaging

There are two sachets inside the carton. One holds the premix and the other contains sugar. Neither the pouch, nor the carton are resealable. In the case of pancakes, if the premix is unfinished, you would need to store the premix in an air-tight container. A 200-gram pack that yields 5 servings is priced at Rs 199/-. It has a shelf life of six months.

Main Ingredients

The cake mix sachet contains a gluten-free blend (brown rice, sorghum, raagi, soy protein isolate, starch), cocoa powder, sugar, coconut milk powder, vanilla powder, baking powder, xanthan gum, salt, and emulsifier (E472). The sugar sachet has sugar.

This also contains nature-identical flavors.

We appreciate how the brand mentions caloric values per serving and the changes in quantity before and after the cake is baked.

On average, a regular slice (60-65 grams) of chocolate sponge cake would offer 196 Kcal with 36 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fat, and 5.5 grams of protein.

A 60-gram slice of Gran’s Goodness Chocolate cake would offer 222 Kcal which is divided as 8.4 grams of fat, 33 grams of carbohydrates, and 3.5 grams of protein.

Though there isn’t a significant difference in terms of calories and macronutrients, this gluten-free cake premix has more fiber and less sugar, as compared to a slice of refined wheat flour-based chocolate cake.

How we made it

The brand offers an egg and eggless version. Moreover, you can adjust the sweetness as desired. Thumbs up for this liberty.

We prepared our cake with egg.

As suggested, we mixed the premix with 100 ml of water, 25 ml of melted butter, and one egg. Once all ingredients came together, we greased our pan with butter, and preheated the oven at 180 degrees.

It took around 25 minutes to bake to perfection. At this stage, we did the toothpick test and it came out clean, indicating there were no uncooked portions.

Texture

The cake had risen but not as much as a cake made of refined flour would. After pouring the batter, we flattened the surface a bit with the spatula. This patted surface was retained post-baking. As we sliced it, the cake felt quite soft and spongy. It wasn’t dry and was well-cooked.

PS- this would pair well with warm beverages.

Taste

The flavors of the gluten-free millet blend were quite prominent. Our panel of reviewers easily recognized this wasn’t a refined flour cake, but millet-based. The sweetness was on the lower side. The chocolate flavor wasn’t rich or intense.

The plus point here is that you can add toppings like ganache, syrups, cream, as it would not make the cake unbearably sweet.
