They say a substantial portion of protein is the best way to start the day. Why? Protein slows down digestion, ensuring stable blood glucose levels throughout the day.

And if you’re vegetarian or vegan who prefers a savory breakfast with a decent nutrition profile, you know the options are quite limited. In our quest to find a RTE meal that checks these boxes, our research team found Gladful’s premixes. For our Gladful Chilla Mix review, we ordered two variants- Spinach and Beetroot.

What sets the brand apart, do we recommend them or not- more such questions answered in the review.

Our Review Factors

What are we looking for? We were looking for a convenient-to-use chilla mix with a clean ingredient list, toothsome flavors and a soft texture.

What factors did we take into account while reviewing Gladful Chilla Mixes?

Flavors, textures, and the nutrition profile were given equal weightage while rating these premixes.

1. Taste

As listed on the pack, the key ingredients are dals/millets, lentils, beetroot, and spinach. We checked the freshness, how pronounced the innate flavors were, and the balance of seasoning.

2. Texture

Soft bites with crisp edges- this is the texture we were looking for. These shouldn’t be too dense or grainy.

3. Nutrition Quotient

A fueling, nourishing breakfast must have 300-400 calories with a balanced distribution of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Carbohydrates being the highest followed by proteins and fats would be ideal.

Considering the target audience, a clean ingredient list will be a positive attribute.

4. Convenience

How long does it take to cook the chillas? What ingredients are needed from the pantry? If there are too many ingredients needed from the pantry, it would take away from the convenience. Any particular drawbacks in this segment?

5. Other Parameters

All non-tasting parameters like the price, packaging, shelf life were recorded here.

Beetroot and Spinach were the variants we tried.

Gladful Chilla Mix Flavours – Detailed Review

Our experience from batter-making to cooking to tasting both variants of Gladful Chilla Mix has been explained in the following section.

1. Sprouted Multi Lentil Spinach

Our Experience

The prepared chillas were appetizing with a well-rounded seasoning. Neither too salted or too spicy, it was fresh and flavorful. We could taste a desirable bean-like flavor of moong. This also featured a pleasing texture. It was soft and well-cooked in five-six minutes.

The batter-making process was seamless. There was no formation of lumps, plus the only ingredient we needed was water. You can add curd if you want, but it’s not compulsory. The batter spreads effortlessly on the pan, without any breakage.

Plus, the mix to water ratio suggested by the brand was spot-on, it needed no adjustments.

Mishry’s take on nutrition

  • Sprouted lentils and millets are better as they are easier to digest and the assimilation process is lighter on the digestive system.
  • Millets have a low glycemic index, they do not create a massive spike in sugar levels. Lentils are rich in fiber and protein, they also work to slow down the digestion, ensuring sustained energy.
  • Clean ingredients, no additives, no preservatives, nothing artificial- full marks on nutrition.
This was easy to mix and didn't form lumps.

2. Sprouted Moong Beetroot

Our Experience

Not just a favorable taste, the appearance was equally as appealing of these pink-hued chillas. Similar to the above variant, the seasoning was bang-on. Right off the pan, these had a desirable soft bite which was retained a few hours after cooling down too.

This also makes a considerable tiffin snack. The seasoning, batter making process, spreadability etc are similar to the above variant.

Although not necessary, you can add a portion of veggies and paneer to improve satiety and make this even more nutritious.

This developed a red hue once mixed with water.

The moong flavor was prominent.
