Snacks By Place Of Origin: #FirstImpressions

check out our first impressions of the impressive list of traditional snacks by place of origin

An online-only, and now a very popular, food start-up called Place of Origin, is known for selling specialty foods from across the country, including traditionally made, regional snacks and sweets. Place of Origin now has its own range of packaged snacks. The range is impressive and we found handy, 65gm, resealable packs in premium store sin Delhi NCR. Though there were a lot of flavors for us to choose from, we settled for three that come from different parts of the country.

Kolhapuri kaju bhadang, a snack that belongs to Maharashtra, Burhanpuri gathiya, one of Madhya Pradesh’s original taste, and lastly, Jamnagari dry-fruit chiwda, a Gujarati favorite.

Quick Facts About These Place Of Origin Snacks

  1. All the different flavors contain special ingredients from each state that they represent, and this gives them that unique taste which is particular to a certain geographic region.
  2. These mixes are flavored with the traditional Indian spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, and red chilli, which help in giving them an authentic taste.

Though we have mentioned what the company claims to offer with there range of snacks, which is taste and health, however, how can you be sure that all of these promises are justifiably kept? We here at Mishry grabbed a few of these snacks, and this is what we found after tasting each one of them:

1. Burhanpuri Gathiya

This Madhya Pradesh snack, which is a mix of wholesome gram flour and fresh spices, and topped with carom seeds, has a puffy texture and the addition of black pepper give it a fiery punch.

Gathiya is a spicy treat from Madhya Pradesh made using besan (gram flour). This spicy treat is very true to what original gathiya tastes like. It is soft, crunchy and would taste even better on a rainy day with a cup of tea.

2. Jamnagari Dry-Fruit Chiwda

This product claims to be a perfect balance of sweet and salty, which is what a chiwda generally tastes like. With ingredients such as black grapes, raisins, and cashews, this snack, apart from tasting good, is also quite healthy.

Crunchy, and delightful, this is our most favorite savory snack from the three we tasted. It is light and the crispy pieces of wheat flakes are very small in size, making it different from other packaged chiwda namkeens available.

Sweet, salty, and loaded with dry-fruit to make it a healthier choice.

 3. Kolhapuri Kaju Bhadang

One of the most popular Marathi snack, this crunchy snack is loaded with cashew, garlic, and peanuts. This is in fact one of the limited addition flavors that is prepared by the master chefs at the famous Amba Bhadang snack shop in Kolhapur.

This is fiery and crunchy as promised. It is delicious and was loved by all the chili-lovers in the team. With a distinct garlicky-aroma, the bhandang has peanuts, cashew nuts and garlic in good measure. Because it is largely made up of puffed rice, the snack doesn’t feel heavy and maintains its crunchiness.
