When reviewing Double Horse Brahmin Sambar Powder, we were looking for the right balance of spices that hits the nose and palate and an ingredient list that does not use onions/garlic.

1. Aroma

Hing, curry leaves, chilli, coriander, and a favorable balance of other essential spices- that’s how a pot of sambar brewing should smell like. Did this ready-to-use mix lend the inviting aroma we were looking for?

2. Flavor

Spice kick laced with a subtle sweetness, a slight pungency, and overall seasoning. Is this powder all convenience, no flavor?

3. Main Ingredients

We scanned the ingredient list to find out whether or not this is truly devoid of onion and garlic. Moreover, does it use natural spices or artificial flavors? Are the spices roasted or raw?

100 grams of this powder are offered in a non-resealable pouch. Once opened, the contents must be transferred to an air-tight container to preserve freshness. This is priced at Rs 51 and has a shelf life of 12 months.

Coriander, chilli, gram dhal, asafoetida, black gram, fenugreek, turmeric powder, and black pepper.

All the key ingredients that are typically used in Brahmin sambar powder (satvik ingredients) are added here. Moreover, it does not use onion/garlic.

How we tested

Soaked arhar dal was cooked with some salt. In another pot, we cooked some veggies and added them to the dal. This mix was simmered for a few minutes before we added a tablespoon of Double Horse Brahmin Sambar powder to this. No tempering was added as our aim was to gauge the flavor of the powder. 

Aroma & Flavor

In terms of aroma, asafoetida was the most prominent. However, once cooked, the sambar showcased the authentic aroma its known for. Brahmin sambar powder, unlike regular sambar powder, has a mustard yellow appearance. Double Horse’s matched this. Thumbs up.

It had a pretty good flavor profile. Like aroma, the boldest ingredient flavor-wise was asafoetida. With a pleasing pungency of hing, this had balanced spiciness.
