Our Review Factors

Here’s what we set out to find- The prime focus was to check how convenient and nutritious Bebe Burp Porridge mixes are. Whether it is the ease of preparation, quality of ingredients, taste, and texture, these mixes were put under the Mishry microscope.

1. Nutrition Quotient

Main Ingredients

What are the key ingredients used? Have the quantities been specified? Are the ingredients safe for toddlers? Are allergens mentioned on the pack?

Calories

Does the brand specify the caloric values per serving? If yes, do fit into the prescribed RDA needs for little ones over six months of age?

2. Taste

Introducing semi-solids to little ones can be a task and you can end up scratching your head over what goes well with what. While taste alone isn’t the most important parameter for those between 6-12 months of age, factors such as texture, ease, and safety (as they are still learning how to swallow solids) come up ahead for consideration. As they grow up, they can choose what they prefer and easily reject the ‘flying spoon airplanes’!

Fruits, veggies, aromatic spices, millets, cereals, lentils, grains-all the ingredients that go in the making have unique flavors. Which was the most dominant on the palate?

3. Texture

Typically, porridge should be soft and creamy, with a little bit of a bite. The end result after following the brand’s recommendations has been detailed in the following section.

4. Convenience

How long do the porridges need to be cooked for? Are the porridge mixes travel-friendly? From a trip to the mall to a family vacation, how convenient are these to make? Do they have the potential to replace a homemade meal occasionally? Does one require a lot of ingredients from the pantry to cook these?

5. Other Parameters

Packaging

Is the packaging resealable or do the contents need to be transferred to another container?

Price

Would these prove to be economical in the long run or would we rather recommend preparing porridge at home from scratch?

Shelf Life

The brand claims these are preservative-free. Does that mean these should have a fairly short shelf life? On analyzing we found out…

Bebe Burp Porridge Mixes Flavours – Detailed Review

The following section discusses all our experiences with three variants of Bebe Burp porridge mixes.

1. Khichdi Porridge with Spinach and Carrot

There are two sachets inside the pack, one holds the porridge mix, and the other, jaggery powder. A small blue-colored scoop meant for measuring the porridge mix is included.

Note – Bebe Burp does not mention the second pack (jaggery) anywhere on the outer packing or the inner sachet. We learned this fact after reading the FAQs on their website.

This variant is made with organic split lentils (25%), organic rice (35%), a mix of spices (cumin seeds, carom seeds, asafoetida), jaggery, freeze-dried spinach, and carrot.

Split lentils- A great source of fiber, lentils are a powerhouse of micronutrients like potassium, iron, and vitamin B1. Moreover, since the lentils are split, they cook quicker.

Rice- Rice is a gluten-free whole grain that provides instant energy and is light on the digestive system.

Cumin seeds- Rich in antioxidants, cumin may increase appetite and boost metabolism, thus promoting growth.

Carom seeds- Not just flavor and aroma, carom seeds are known to provide relief from cold, cough, and gas.

Asafoetida- Commonly known as hing, asafoetida does wonders for the digestive system.

Jaggery- This sweet-tasting source of iron has significant benefits on the bones, liver, and intestines, and builds immunity overall.

What is freeze drying? Is it healthy?

Dehydrating fruits is a common technique to enhance shelf life and use them year-round. However, freeze-drying is not the same as dehydrating, and is, in fact, a better alternative. While using a dehydrator kills essential nutrients and vitamins, freeze-drying retains up to 90% of the nutritional content.

Spinach- Spinach helps build stronger bones and muscles as it contains vitamins like A, C, and K in substantial quantities.

Carrot- Carrots are rich in fiber and loaded with vitamin K and calcium. Both these help build stronger bones.

The brand suggests adding 60 ml of boiled water or milk to four and a half scoops of the porridge mix. We added both ingredients proportionately and stirred them well. It mixed quite effortlessly and there were no lumps formed.

As instructed, we let the mix sit for five minutes before serving.

PS- Adding ghee/butter was a suggestion too. We did not add either of these as the taste and texture would be altered, resulting in an unfair review.

Texture-wise, the porridge was a little thick. We added some more hot water and achieved the standard, porridge-like consistency. Overall, this is soft and chewy, and definitely toddler-friendly in terms of the bite.

Of all the ingredients used, spinach was the most prominent, taste-wise. As is the case with most baby foods, the porridge tasted bland as it was unsalted. We added jaggery as suggested. However, this addition did not impact the taste significantly. You could try adding milk (formula or breast) or ghee/butter for an enhanced flavor profile. That said, it is best to consult a specialist before introducing salt/sugar to your child.

Coming to the nutrition quotient, the brand lists lentils before rice when the latter is used in a higher quantity. As per FSSAI’s guidelines – ‘The name of ingredients used in the product shall be listed in descending order of their composition by weight or volume, as the case may be at the time of its manufacture.’

60 ml of water/milk to be added to 4.5 scoops of the mix.
  • Thumbs up on the clean ingredient list.
  • It contains no preservatives or lab-made ingredients.
  • It contains no additional sweeteners.
  • Toddler-friendly texture.
  • It is a fine powder that eliminates the possibility of choking.
  • Easy to prepare, especially when traveling.
  • The ingredients are easy to digest.
  • A scoop has been provided for more convenience.
  • The order of ingredients is incorrect.
  • Though the brand mentions using organic ingredients, there was no specific certification corroborating this.

If you are looking for a convenient way to give your baby the goodness of greens, then Bebe Burp Porridge mix in Spinach and Carrot is something you could try. This works best when you are out, traveling locally, or going to a restaurant that may not have a toddler menu. The porridge is quick to prepare and does not need many ingredients from the pantry to carry along.

2. Finger Millet Porridge with Apple and Carrot

The packaging and cooking instructions are the same as the above variant.

The main ingredients are organic finger millet (55%), organic Bengal Gram (25%), organic rice, a mix of spices (cumin seeds, carom seeds, asafoetida), jaggery, freeze-dried apple & carrot.

Finger millet (Ragi)- This millet is truly a superfood. Fiber, minerals, amino acids, Ragi even has more polyphenols than commonly consumed grains like rice and wheat. Polyphenols protect the body’s tissues and cells.

Bengal gram- This supports regular bowel movements due to its high fiber content. It provides sustained energy and is a plant-based source of protein.

Apple- It is rightly said ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ as apples provide all-around benefits. From stronger bones to a sharper mind, apples are a good source of fiber and antioxidants.

We followed the same proportions and method for preparing this porridge.

The texture was identical to the first variant- a bit thick to begin with. The brand recommends adding formula milk or breast milk to arrive at a consistency of your liking. If you let the prepared porridge sit for a few minutes, it will get thicker as Finger millet has a natural tendency to absorb fluids. We adjusted the mix with some additional hot water.

Taste-wise, the natural yet subtle earthy bitterness of Ragi could be tasted. However, the flavors of the spice mix were not prominent. Adding jaggery and milk is another brand suggestion. However, we did not add either of these to gauge the true flavor of the porridge mix.

There were two sachets inside the main pack, with a scoop.
This was quite thick, but easy to chew.
  • Same as above.
  • The natural flavor of Ragi was tasted.
  • The organic certification is unspecified.

Introducing your baby to millets? If you want to skip the process of buying Ragi and converting it into flour, then roasting and cooking the porridge, this variant by Bebe Burp is equally good.

3. Barley Porridge with Banana and Strawberry

The main ingredients are organic pearl barley (65%), a mix of spices, (cumin seeds, carom seeds, asafoetida), jaggery, freeze-dried banana, and strawberry.

Pearl barley- This grain helps maintain a positive balance of gut bacteria and is rich in minerals like potassium, iron, and folate, among others that support cardiovascular functions.

Strawberry- Any natural food that resembles the shape of a particular organ or body part is good for it, have you heard this before?

Almonds for your eyes, walnuts for your brains, and strawberries are heart-shaped signifying they are good for heart health. This fiber-rich fruit is known to increase HDL which is good cholesterol.

Our experience with the texture of the third Bebe Burp porridge mix variant was the same as the above two. We achieved the smooth, flowy consistency by gradually adding water and stirring.

Since this is labeled Banana and Strawberry, we expected a sweet, fruity flavor profile. However, that was not the case. This had a savory flavor and aroma. The fruity flavor was barely present. Just like the second variant, we did not add the jaggery powder.

Nutrition Quotient- 4/5
Taste- 3/5
Texture- 4/5
Convenience- 4/5
This variant contains 65% organic pearl barley.
We made the porridge of a runny consistency by adding some more water.
  • Same as above.
  • It contains more than 50% barley.
  • More specifications on the organic certification would have been appreciated.
  • The flavor of banana and strawberry were too subtle.

Looking for a quick, convenient, nutritious meal for your toddler on the go? Bebe Burp porridges are something you could consider trying.
