Amul, a brand known for its dairy products, has now ventured into the world of peanut butters. Recently, it launched its peanut butter in two variants – Creamy and Crunchy. Today we are trying and tasting the creamy variant.

1. Taste 

The taste of fresh, well-roasted peanuts is what defines a good quality PB. We expect here is fresh-tasting peanut butter with no off-putting or stale smell of the oil. The peanut butter should not taste rancid. As this is sweetened, we also checked for the level of salt and sugar in this nut butter. 

2. Texture (Consistency + Spreadability) 

This is the creamy variant, hence we are expecting a smooth texture that is free from lumps. It should be easy to scoop, smooth to spread, and creamy in consistency. How was our experience here? 

3. Nutrition Label (Ingredients + Nutritional Information)

A clean ingredient list with no hidden sugars, preservatives, additives, and other nasties, is our core focus here. What are the main ingredients seen here? We also check the amount of protein, fats, calories, and sugar content in our review.

Appearance 

Peanut butter might showcase a layer of oil floating on top which is completely normal. Did we notice any oil separation here? 

Aroma

Amul’s Peanut Spread Creamy comes in a plastic jar. A 300 gm pack costs Rs. 140/-.

Aroma 

The aroma observed here is predominantly of oil and peanuts. We missed the aroma of fresh roasted peanuts. 

Nutri Label ( Ingredients + Nutrition) 

The primary ingredients seen here are – Peanuts (90%), Sugar, Groundnut oil, Iodised salt, and Stabilizer (E471).

Stabilizer (E471): It is a common food additive found in packaged foods. It works as a thickening, emulsifying, anti-caking, and preservative agent in food products. 

Allergen Information – Contains peanuts.

The nutritional information per 100 gm of Amul Peanut Spread Creamy has 605 kcal of energy, 45 gm of total fat, 0 gm of trans fat, 25 gm of protein, and 6.2 gm of added sugar. 

There is no mention of the nutritional information for a single serve. But when we calculate it, a single serving of this peanut butter gets you around 8 gm of protein, approximately 200 kcal of energy, and around 2 grams of added sugar. A single serving is approximately 32 gms (2 tablespoons). This is the usual average when compared to other sweetened PBs. 

Taste

Peanut butter should be dominant on the flavor of roasted peanuts. When peanuts are roasted, there is a chemical reaction (Maillard Reaction) between the sugar and protein which is responsible for the browning and hence gives a more intense flavor.

Having tasted numerous peanut butters in the past, we can say that we have definately had better-tasting peanut butters than Amul in this particular category. This doesn’t taste as fresh and the flavor of groundnut oil is dominant in comparison to peanuts. The sweet and salty flavors are apt.

Texture (Consistency + Spreadability)

Starting with the texture, we did not observe any oil separation in our review variant. Despite being smooth, there is a slightly grainy mouthfeel which happens in most sweetened PBs.

The creaminess and spreadability of this peanut spread are excellent.
