Our Review Factors
Taste, texture, convenience, and nutrition quotient were the prime parameters of our Saffola Soya Bhurji review.
1. Taste
Soy is fairly neutral tasting by itself and absorbs the flavors you add to them. Have the seasonings been added proportionately or does it need some adjusting? Salt and spices in sync? Does the soy taste raw? Any industrial, unpleasant flavors?
2. Texture
Soy granules mimic the texture of a keema (meat mince). Ofcourse, it’s not as juicy and succulent as mutton or chicken keema, but it does replicate it to some extent.
Is the bhurji cooked in the given time frame? Too dry or loaded with gravy, what was it like? The soy granules should be slightly soft, juicy and have a meaty bite.
3. Nutrition Quotient
Here we checked the ingredients used and compared the nutrition values with raw soy. A clean ingredient list, protein and fiber content were our prime focus.
4. Other Parameters
The price, packaging, shelf life, and overall convenience were gauged here.
Saffola Soya Bhurji – Detailed Review
Price + Packaging
The soya bhurji comes in a non-resealable pouch. One pouch holds 35 grams of content and is priced at Rs 15/-. It has a shelf life of eight months.
Main Ingredients
Soy granules (65%), seasoning (iodised salt, sugar, spices and condiments, starch, nature-identical flavoring substances, hydrolysed vegetable protein, maltodextrin, natural flavoring substances, flavor enhancers (627, 631)), refined rice bran oil, dried vegetables (onion (6.1%), garlic, carrot (0.5%), green peas (0.5%)), natural flavoring substances are the ingredients used.
Our take – Ingredients like maltodextrin and flavor enhancers should not be a part of your regular diet. These are best consumed in moderation. Although convenience is prime, a cleaner ingredient list would have been appreciated.
Nutrition Information
Per 35 grams, this offers 121.45 Kcal with 12.95 g carbohydrates, 12.6 g protein, and 3.64 g fats.
Our take – Comparing these values to homemade soya bhurji, we found that although the caloric values are similar, homemade soya bhurji has less carbohydrates and more fat than Saffola’s variant. Saffola’s Soya Bhurji also has a higher protein content.
How we made it
As instructed on the pack, we added the contents to a pan with 150 ml of water. This was cooked on a medium-high heat for five-seven minutes until the desired consistency was obtained. Served hot!
We did not face any issues while cooking this bhurji and the given proportions are apt. The recipe/instructions need no adjustments.
Aroma + Appearance
The aroma was masaledaar, in both- the dry and cooked stages. Straight out of the pack, this had a chunky, granola-like appearance. Once cooked, this turned mushy, exactly like a bhurji.
Taste + Texture
The quantity of water suggested was apt, it needed no adjustments. The soy granules weren’t floating in gravy, but weren’t too dry either. They had a lovely meaty bite.
As for the taste, it was prominent on the garam masala flavors, especially of pepper and clove. The salt and spice were well balanced with a black pepper kick. We liked how the flavors were homestyle and devoid of unnatural tastes. We could see a few onion bits and green peas.
Pros
- Beginner-friendly preparation
- Thumbs up on the nutrition profile
- Protein and fiber-rich
- Economic
Cons
- The ingredient list could have been better.
